As many of us know, asbestos is a naturally occurring but dangerous substance that has been used around the world. Primarily used within construction and insulation sectors, asbestos can be typically found in buildings and certain vehicles today. Asbestos was ideal for building and construction industries as it would strengthen cement and plastics as well as provide insulation, lightweight roofing, fireproofing, and sound absorption. 

Why is asbestos dangerous? 

Asbestos fibres can cause a type of scarring in the lungs, pulmonary fibrosis also called asbestosis. Prolonged exposure and inhalation of asbestos fibres can cause shortness of breath and has been linked to several types of cancer. Health issues caused by asbestos usually take several years to appear and can be difficult to treat. 

Because of these intense health problems caused by asbestos, it was subsequently banned in the UK in 1999. However, it is still found in older (20th century) buildings to this day. Usually, it is uncovered by accident when redecorating or refurbishing a property.  Due to its dangerous health risks, asbestos needs to be removed and disposed of safely and professionally. 

Professional Asbestos Disposal 

Although asbestos can be extremely harmful to health, it is only harmful if it is damaged or tampered with. This is because, when moved it releases fine dust particles that contains asbestos fibres that when inhaled, causes health issues. Materials that contain asbestos should only be removed when absolutely necessary and by professionals that have the skills and experience to correctly identify, remove and dispose asbestos.

The UK law is very strict on who can and cannot handle asbestos, and the procedures that need to be followed with regards to disposal. It’s worth noting that some asbestos contaminated materials can only be removed by a licenced asbestos professional.
